Есть определенная логика в том, что в современном глобализующемся мире, «пространстве потоков», как охарактеризовал его Мануэль Кастельс (Castells 1989), вопрос о границах стал как никогда актуальным. Свидетельством тому является растущее количество исследований, посвященных взаимоотношению политических и социальных границ и вопросам территориальности и идентичности. Исследование Матайса Пелкманса «На страже границы», посвященное влиянию политической границы на системы коллективных идентичностей и солидарностей местных сообществ, — в их числе.
