The Scientific Revolution through a Gendered Lens: A Review of Feminist Histories of Science

Abstract

Feminist and gender-conscious historians have challenged traditional narratives about early modern science. They have reintegrated great scientific works into cultural, literary, economic, and art history, and emphasized erotic and other gendered themes in disciplines as diverse as astronomy, biology, and medicine. They have drawn attention to how male scientists have misinterpreted uniquely female experiences such as childbirth and the female orgasm, and challenged gender-blind notions of objectivity. Their insights should now be extended into the study of other emotional and literary aspects of science. Russian and (slightly abridged) English version.
